Learn how to get the most from your SEO project.
It is about how people search, what words they use. Use their words, often
, but with valuable reader content and you will be found.
There are so many search engines, where should I list my site?
You may be under the old impression, in order to get listed in a search engine,
I must pay a submission fee. O.k., here's the first reality check. Most primary
search engines such as Google actually index pages automatically, without you
having
to do
anything. This may take some time however, several weeks to months. You will
also notice that Yahoo offers business listings for $299.00. Some of our clients
have found that they saw some positive movement when paying the Yahoo search
submission fee, but dropped like a rock upon a failed billing attempt. What's
worse, their site never recovered on Yahoo.com until they allowed the site
to be unlisted for a little over one year.
Another client attempted to use the Search Submit program, thinking it would
improve their ranking with Yahoo. They were pulling first and second page search
engine results for most of their 2 an 3 word terms Yahoo declined their submission
as the site's primary mission was as an affiliate account. Now the bad part,
shortly after Yahoo's decline, the site totally disappeared from Yahoo's search
results. In fact, its been almost two years and it is still nowhere to be found
today.
We're not telling you not to use Yahoo Search Submit, in fact, we really
like Yahoo's

program. We're merely pointing out the potential downside, should your
site be viewed unfavorably.
Unfortunately, listing alone will not get your
site "placed or ranked high", time and additional SEO optimization
of your site's targeted keywords is required to bring your site up to a higher
rank in the search engines.
In the early days of search engine optimization, developers focused on meta-tags
as the primary way to attract search engine traffic. Meta-tags are HTML tags
that help describe the document they are located within. Although meta tags
sometimes play a role in the recognition of web sites, we now know
that there
are many more factors that go into the process. Now search
engines concentrate
on site content, internal link structure and link popularity as well.

The comScore Media Metrix qSearch service measures search-specific
traffic on the internet. qSearch data is gathered by monitoring
the web activities of 1.5 million English-speakers worldwide (1
million in the United States) via proxy metering.
Proxy metering allows comScore to see exactly how those within
its panel have surfed the web. From this data, the company then
extracts activity that's considered to be specifically search-related.
Below are figures about searching from qSearch figures released
to the public.
Share Of Searches: July 2006
The pie chart below shows the percentage of searches done by
US web surfers at home, work and at universities in July 2006
that were performed at a particular web site or a network of
web sites:
The qSearch figures are search-specific but not
necessarily web-search specific. For example, a search performed
at Yahoo Sports would count toward Yahoo's overall total. Also
note that some companies own more than one web site. This means
searches at different sites may be combined into one overall
figure for the company's entire network. Here's a rundown with
more details about this:
Google: Shows searches at any Google-owned web site such
as Google.com or Google Image Search.
Yahoo: Shows searches
at any Yahoo-owned web site including
those of AltaVista, AllTheWeb and Overture. May show searches
at some Google partners that show Google's domain in the
URLs of their search results, as happens with Go.com.
MSN: Shows searches at any MSN-operated web site such as MSN Search.
AOL: Shows searches at any Time Warner-owned web site, including
AOL Search and Netscape Search.
Ask: Shows searches at Ask
and any site within the Ask-owned Excite Network, including
Excite, iWon, MyWay.com and
My Web Search.
Other: Shows searches that occur at
other search sites.

Engine Facts
Over 80% of web site traffic is generated from
the top ten search engines.
Overall search-engine-driven traffic increased
by 9% during the last year. This was much slower
growth than the 95% recorded from 2001 to 2002. The
extreme growth in 2001 was likely due to the emergence
of Google as the dominant search engine, since Google
has a tendency to drive traffic to high-quality websites.
About 85% of qualified Internet traffic is generated
through search engines.

In an average day, Web users report searching
the Internet (57%) and looking for product information
(46%) more often than any other activity except email.
